A new report says there's little stopping Europe catching up to the US in cloud computing. The study, carried out by the London School of Economics and Political Science and commissioned by Microsoft, looked at the projected economic impact of cloud computing on the aerospace and smartphone services industries in the UK, USA, Germany and Italy from 2010-2014.

That Boom You Hear Is the Cloud
Cloud computing is creating the new Wall Street boom, according to NIA. The only industry that is as bright as cloud computing on Wall Street is social networking, NIA said in a recent report.
2012 will be known as the year cloud computing became widely adopted worldwide. Cloud computing is expected to create 14 million new jobs globally by 2015. In the consumer space, Gartner predicts cloud services will be on 90 percent of personal consumer devices by 2015 so consumers can store, connect, stream and synchronize content across multiple platforms at different locations. That's a lot of tunes and apps.
So far this year, there have been three IPOs of cloud computing stocks, and all three IPOs have been major successes, indicating cloud computing is ready for primetime on Wall Street. And where the money goes, jobs follow.

The Dramatic Shift in Cloud Computing Intentions
A new survey suggests that as cloud moves into the mainstream of business, it brings new sources of anxiety as well. This disruption and the dramatic shift in cloud computing intentions over the past few years is revealed in a report by Saugatuck Technology.
“Buying and deployment patterns have shifted rapidly toward a near full embrace of the cloud, from the more tactical and point solution-focused initiatives not long ago,” writes Bill McNee, author of the report.
Saugatuck Technology conducted in-depth interviews with CIOs and CTOs at 12 large organizations. The CIOs and CTOs see themselves as now entering a “crisis of opportunity” and innovation, McNee wrote in the report. The crisis is about more than just a revolution in service delivery, McNee said. The dilemna is also fueled by the drive toward mobility, advanced analytics and social business. What this calls for is “a new mission for IT, with a new set of roles, responsibilities and skills required for success.”

What Cloud Computing Really Means
Cloud computing is all the rage.
"It's become the phrase du jour," said Gartner senior analyst Ben Pring. The problem, according to InfoWorld, is that everyone seems to have a different definition of cloud computing.
Some analysts and vendors define cloud computing as an updated version of utility computing: virtual servers available over the Internet. Others go broad, arguing anything you consume outside the firewall is "in the cloud," including conventional outsourcing, according to InfoWorld.
InfoWorld talked to dozens of vendors, analysts and IT customers on various components of cloud computing. Here is InfoWorld's rough breakdown of what cloud computing is all about.

AWS Sets Up One-Stop Shop for Cloudware
Oh, look, Amazon Web Services’s got a one-stop cloud store.
It’s renting third-party cloudware by the hour or by the month that’s pre-configured for its cloud at a new online AWS Marketplace.
In a click users can float software from folks like IBM, Microsoft, Canonical, Red Hat, SUSE, SAP, Zend, Couchbase, CA and Check Point and get a single bundled bill.
Beats scrambling around getting the same stuff off individual web sites and sorting through a bunch of bills.
The wares include business applications, tools, platforms, whole stacks, security and networking. Users can discover and compare.
The scheme is also supposed to make customer acquisition, managing accounts and billing easier for the merchants.

Is Cloud Computing a Green Giant?
Cloud computing already has trimmed some businesses' IT costs. But a report found that it also could be the next big thing to help reduce their energy use, according to greenbiz.com
The fourth annual Energy Efficient IT Report – by technology products and services seller CDW – calls cloud computing a possible “game changer” that's playing a growing role in energy efficiency.
For the report, CDW surveyed 760 people working in private businesses, nonprofits, schools and governments. Of these respondents, 62 percent agreed that cloud computing is an energy-efficient way to consolidate data centers.

Cloud Makes Impact on TV Execs at NAB Show
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference in Las Vegas that ended last week saw a 10 percent hike in vendor exhibits from last year and a slight rise in the number of people attending at 92,112. The world’s largest media event since covering filmed entertainment and content delivery in 1922 inducted Betty White and Bob Uecker into its Hall of Fame, and the unmanned military-issued drone flying overhead was prone to taking pictures of Teri Hatcher among other beauties. But among the technorati, those things were not the only star attractions.
For the first time in NAB history, cloud computing was put on the agenda. Thanks to the efforts of the Distributed Computing Industry Association (DCIA.info), a pavilion was dedicated to looking at how the cloud relates to the A/V ecosystem at each stage of the content distribution chain, from collaboration to storage, delivery and analytics, ending the cloud portion of the show with “Disruptive Effects of Cloud Computing Will Continue.”
