Today data has replaced money as the global currency for trade. “McKinsey estimates that about 75 percent of the value added by data flows on the Internet accrues to “traditional” industries, especially via increases in global growth, productivity, and employment. Furthermore, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) estimates that about 50 percent of all traded services are enabled by the technology sector, including by cross-border data flows.”

From PC Break/Fix to CloudMASTER®

$

It was late 2011 and Steven Donovan was comfortable working at SHI International Corporation, a growing information technology firm, as a personal computer break/fix technician. His company had been growing quickly from a $1 million "software-only" regional re-seller into eventually becoming a $6 billion global provider of information technology products and services.

At that time, cloud computing was just starting to explode onto the information technology scene. Although Amazon Web Services had been offering its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) since 2006, browser-based enterprise applications from companies like Google had only been around since 2009. Steven wanted to somehow elevate himself professionally so after hearing good things about the New Jersey Institutes CloudMASTER® certification he enrolled. After a short, but intense, online curriculum Steven earned NJIT CloudMASTER® Certificate 11002.

Shortly after earning his certification, Steven’s company recognized his newly learned expertise by reassigning him to serve as a Tier 1 Cloud Administrator.  Quickly honing and sharpening his skills, he soon found himself promoted to a Tier 2 Cloud Administration.  These new skills not only elevated Steven at work, but the experience also unleashed an entrepreneurial drive, leading him to start his own business developing applications for android smartphones.
“The CloudMASTER Certification is great for learning cloud computing basics.  It really helps you to pick your professional direction in the cloud computing industry. You can either support the cloud or develop for the cloud.  The money, however, is in development!”
Salary information credit: Indeed.com

Steven is now a Service Consultant with Flexera Software. Flexera helps application producers and enterprises increase application usage and security, enhancing the value they derive from their software. At Flexera, Steven specializes in implementing and configuring the company’s FlexNet Manager Platform/Suite (FNMP/S). Part of his job consists of building business adapters to connect and import external data into FNMP/S. He also configures FlexNet Discovery and Inventory, including inventory beacons, agents, and connections to Oracle, Microsoft, Citrix, and VMware.

As more companies take advantage of cloud service benefits, the need for IT professionals to be skillful in the use and implementation of a wide range of cloud services becomes even more acute. This form of training also serves as a layer of protection against well-known cloud transition missteps like cloud service vendor lock-in and inadequate cloud service provider due diligence.

If you’re looking for a way to elevate yourself like Steven, the National Cloud Technologist Association (NCTA) and Logical Operations NCTA CloudMASTER® Certification Training Program is for you. This is the first time that NCTA content will be delivered outside of the association’s higher education partners. Through Logical Operations, NCTA content will be delivered through a broad channel that will provide outstanding delivery options to a wide spectrum of professionals interested in cloud computing.

Surviving the Coming 'Hackerpocalypse' | @CloudExpo #API #Cloud #Security

With all the excellent training available on television today, we are all now well prepared to deal with the coming Zombie Apocalypse. Our failure as a society lies, however, in our misunderstanding of the nature of the cybersecurity challenge. This failure threatens us all and our survival will depend on society’s ability to deal with the evolution and maturation of the changing enterprise cybersecurity challenge. If you’re completely oblivious to the living dead threat, a zombie apocalypse refers to a widespread (usually global) rise of zombies hostile to human life. The zombies will engage in a general assault on civilization where victims may become zombies themselves. This causes the outbreak to become an exponentially growing crisis. The spreading phenomenon swamps normal military and law enforcement organizations, leading to the panicked collapse of civilized society until only isolated pockets of survivors remain, scavenging for food and supplies in a world reduced to a pre-industrial hostile wilderness.

Figure 1- Shawn Bolan, Technical Training Manager,
New Horizons of Nebraska,
https://www.linkedin.com/in/shawn-bolan-96b8a9103
In a recent CloudTech article multi-cloud, or hybrid cloud, strategy was heralded as “…
transformative for businesses, allowing them flexibility to scale offerings, save on hosting solutions, and ultimately offer better solutions to their customers. The article goes on to cite:
  • A 2016 Dimensional Research survey of more than 650 IT decision-makers that indicated that 77 percent of businesses are planning to implement multi-cloud architectures in the near future; and
  • A 2015 IDC study that found that 86% of enterprises predicted they will need a multi-cloud approach to support their solutions within the next two years.

The actual benefits of hybrid cloud include:

  • Improve disaster recovery and geo-presence
  • Ability to use unique cloud-specific services from different providers as they are needed
  • Ability to leverage the public cloud benefits of low-cost and unlimited scalability in order to move agile applications to the cloud
  • Use of a private cloud for red-tape bound applications or more traditional infrastructure

This may be why Shawn Bolan, Training Manager for the world’s largest independent training vendor New Horizons , decided to prepare for the new hybrid cloud world by becoming a NCTA CloudMASTERS® instructor. With over 300 locations across 70+ countries, New Horizons always wants to help keep their clients ahead of the curve and the NCTA CloudMASTER Certification is certainly posed to do just that.

Although Shawn already possesses numerous vendor certifications from companies like VMware, Cisco and CompTIA, this “non-vendor specific” preparation, will enable him and his team to deliver the high-level training needed to implement quick hybrid cloud adoption at the demanding pace of IT. According to Shawn, “Training doesn’t stop once you’ve entered the cloud. It actually enhances your professional value.” The three CloudMASTERS® certification modules include hands-on labs that provide much needed practical experience. Relaying comments from earlier classes, graduating students gain a strong sense of personal accomplishment and professional goal achievement ( See "From PC Break/Fix to CloudMASTER®")

Shawn Bolan is Training Manager for New Horizons Omaha, a New Horizons franchise organization that provides virtual training through the cloud. This online training connects students in a classroom with live instructors. After completing the course students have access to the labs for an additional 6 months. New Horizons Omaha is located in 8 cities.

The National Cloud Technologists Association (NCTA) was created in 2012 with the intent to provide vendor-agnostic cloud technology training for IT professionals within all levels of an organization. In comparison with other cloud computing certifications, the NCTA CloudMASTER® certification demonstrates real-world knowledge through practical activities and lab exercises, allowing students to learn and showcase a complete portfolio of skills on a wide range of common cloud technologies.

A New Chapter: “Cloud Musings en español”

Since May 2010, “Cloud Musings” has demonstrated, educated and celebrated the use of advanced technology in business. Specific subjects are sometimes varied, but cloud computing and cybersecurity seem to have become our sweet-spot. Over this period, information technology has transformed from a business support arm to being the core of just about every business model. Business transformation is also accelerating as social media and big data analytics take their place in the mix. We are also very proud to have had the opportunity to partner with industry leading companies like Dell, IBM, NASDAQ and Intel. A shortcoming, however, has been our failure to directly address non-native English speakers. Today we will start to address that issue by launching “Cloud Musings en español”.

So out of all the languages we could have picked why Spanish? The simple answer is that many of our Spanish native speakers have asked us to. We actually have a significant following in Spain, Mexico and across South America so this channel is a natural for us. Also, please don’t forget the large Spanish speaking population in the United States! We strive to continue enhancing our value so delivering advance information technology insight and marketplace observations in the native tongue of a large segment of our readers is more than appropriate and long overdue.

Since this launch is both professionally and personally important, I’ve asked my good friend Arturo Duránto supervise and guide the GovCloud Network Team in this effort. Arturo not only “walks the walk and talks the talk” (natively in Spanish), but he shares my passion around employing advanced information technology in accomplishing business and mission objectives.

At the start, “Cloud Musings en español” will publish translated versions of “Cloud Musings” content. We will also look to publish IT in business stories that originate in the Hispanic business world.  Cloud computing, cybersecurity and big data analytics for government and business will continue to be at our core but the application of our vision will broaden.

Please come visit use at:

We look forward to partnering with you on this exciting journey!

I learned quite a bit about the Trusted Analytics Platform (TAP). TAP is an open source project that Intel developed to make it easier for developers and data scientists to deploy custom big data analytics solutions in the cloud as well as reduce development costs and time-to-market. A few examples of how businesses are using TAP and data analytics to blaze new trails include: Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), the largest university hospital in Europe, worked together to build a cloud-based solution for predicting the expected number of patient visits and hospital admissions;

A steel bar is resistant to stress and is capable of maintaining its form while bearing large loads. While steel is also known as one of the world's strongest metal's (Titanium, Tungsten and Iconel round out the top four), it is also susceptible to shearing and completely breaking. A rubber brick, on the other hand, will bend easily under even small loads, but it's extremely difficult to snap or break. Moreover, once the load is removed from the rubber, its flexibility returns it to its original form. This is how the rubber brick displays resiliency

Your Choice: Cloud Technician or Digital Transformer

$
0
0
The CompTIA Cloud+certification validates the skills and expertise of IT practitioners in implementing and maintaining cloud technologies.  This is exactly what it takes to become a good cloud technician.  In the past few years, however, the National Cloud Technologists Association (NCTA) has recognized that evolving market demands have changed cloud computing technology  in at least 13 ways:
  1.  Variable pricing Cloud service providers charge different prices at different times based on  demand
  2. Pre-emptable machines– Providers are offering a lower price for machines that could be shut down and restarted at a later time without aborting the assigned task
  3. Shift from hardware to algorithms where the hardware is bundled into the software price
  4. Use of reserve instances where the user buys compute power in advance
  5. Buying in bulk where pricing is based on aggregated use even if it is sporadic in nature
  6. Cloud providers offer shared data sources along with commodity hardware
  7. Autoscalingwhere newer software layers offered by cloud vendors handle infrastructure scaling automatically and billing is done by service request instead of by the machine
  8. Graphic processor units have become available for jobs requiring heavy-duty parallel computation
  9. Much improved analytics that monitoring the performance of your systems.
  10. Significant increase in the number of options available for various business requirements and loads
  11. “Bare metal” servers that aren’t virtual.
  12. Containers, like Docker, that makes deploying software much easier and faster.  The cloud will therefore spin up a new instance with a container-ready version of the OS at the bottom.
  13. A growing proliferation of exotic and specialized options, all offering anything you need with the extra phrase “as a service

This means cloud computing isn’t just about technology.  It is about leading organizations through the Digital Transformation era.  This is why the NCTACloudMASTER® certification was created.
Digital transformation is the profound and accelerating transformation of business activities, processes, competencies and models to fully leverage the changes and opportunities of digital technologies and their impact across society in a strategic and prioritized way. Executives in all industries are using digital advances such as analytics, mobility, social media and smart embedded devices as well as improving their use of traditional technologies such as ERP to change customer relationships, internal processes and value propositions.

Serving as “Digital Transformers”, a NCTA CloudMASTER®:
  • Help the organization transforms customer experiences through
    • Customer understanding;
    • Top-line growth; and
    • Customer touch points.
  • Optimizes internal processes through
    • Process digitization;
    • Worker enablement; and
    • Performance management.
  • Transforms a company’s core functions and activities through
    • Digital modifications to the business;
    • Creation of new digital businesses; and
    • Digital Globalization.

This means that if you want to have an IT career in five years, you must strive to be a Digital Transformer, not just a cloud technician.  Our society is experiencing a fundamental shift in information technology’s overarching mission, with the support-and-maintain mind-set giving way to a more strategic, software-centric vision for IT.  IT staff of the future need the skills of a businessperson to stay current, as their company's software requirements and the options for satisfying them will be deep, varied, and changing quickly.  The IT department five years from now will also need to keep pace with nearly constant change. CloudMASTER® training and certification is comprised of three courses with exams:
  • NCTA Cloud Technologies that provide an overview of cloud computing that will help you develop a deep understanding of the models and understand the landscape of technologies used in the cloud and those employed by users of cloud services. You will receive multiple points of view, firsthand experience and a foundation in managing industry leading cloud services like Amazon Web Services, Drupal, Wordpress, Google Docs and Digital Ocean.
  • NCTA Cloud Operations that helps you study the management of cloud operations and addresses the application need for compute power, managing CPU scaling, and meeting both structured and unstructured storage requirements. You will learn how to painlessly deploy fairly complex applications that scale across multiple instances in cloud technologies including Windows Azure Chef, Chef Solo, Linux and Windows Tools.
  • NCTA Cloud Architecture that includes hands-on experience with OpenShift, OpenStack, VMware, Amazon Web Services, Azure and Rackspace, and provides a framework to assess application performance needs while addressing business requirements of Return on Investment (ROI), Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Groups will complete a cloud assessment of Fortune 100 firms using public information and make presentations to the client.

The more complex and interconnected cloud environments become, the more a general understanding and knowledge of how it all works together will be valued.  IT staff will no longer be the ones responsible for “managing the plumbing”, they'll be the people who are thinking of new ways to monetize, share, and use corporate data for organizational success.

So which future do you want for you and your family?

A recent report by Praetorian, a cybersecurity company headquartered in Austin, TX, focused on threats that resulted in data compromise or access to sensitive information. Based on a review of 100 separate internal penetration test engagements the study identified the five most prevalent threats to corporate data. The amazing thing about these weaknesses is that the top four are all based on utilizing stolen credentials and the last one helps an attacker be more effective in using those stolen credentials. In other words, the enemy is right there in the mirror! The study spanned 75 unique organizations and only focused on security weaknesses that were used to obtain a full network compromise.

So how could a NCTA Certified CloudMASTER accelerate his career in the fashion industry?

To answer that question, you would need to catch up with George Youmans, Jr. He has been with fashion giant Ralph Lauren since October 2012. That was around the time he decided to complete the NCTA CloudMASTER curriculum. After graduation George was first promoted to Senior IT Technician and then to Senior Technologist.

So why would a company like Ralph Lauren even need a cloud computing specialist?

Ralph Lauren installed interactive window displays at London’s most up-market department store, Harrods. Shoppers can use their smartphone to activate an interactive map which led them directly to the Fashion Lab where they could buy all of the items they saw on display. If the store was closed then users could still access information about the Ralph Lauren collection from the Harrods website.

Ralph Lauren conduced a technology trial where they embedded RFID tags in clothing that can be detected by the dressing-room mirror. Details about clothing items are displayed on the mirror (several languages are supported), and the system also synchronizes with inventory and point-of-sale systems. The mirror can also mimic the lighting of various environments. Some of its lighting options are white, dusk, club and aquarium. Other lighting options are tailored to the Ralph Lauren brand like "Fifth Avenue Daylight,""East Hampton Sunset" and "Evening at the Polo Bar".

The luxury fashion brand has also joined the race to produce fashionable products for the wearable-technology market. Its men only PoloTech Shirt was to read vital signs like heart rate and variability, breathing depth and recovery, intensity of movement, energy output and stress levels, steps taken and calories burned. Conductive threads are woven into the compression top and a lightweight module snaps around the left rib cage to relay information via Bluetooth. The smartphone app offers live fitness monitoring and offers workouts tailor-made to how your body is reacting. The shirts itself is 70% cotton, 21% nylon and for elasticity 9% spandex.
